Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Showery western Med, strong sunshine east

Friday
Unsettled and cool for northern Europe, whilst a plume of hot air affects the south-east of the continent. Much of Iberia will be dry, sunny and warm, 28 to 30C for southern Portugal and Andalucia. A northerly breeze brings rain to northern Spain. Showers for the western Mediterranean islands, also northern Italy. The central & eastern Mediterranean is hot and sunny, touching 40C for Greece and western Turkey. Temperatures widely into the mid-30s across Romania, Ukraine and the Balkans.
Much cooler temperatures across central & western Europe, only 16 to 19C for France with outbreaks of rain, most persistent in central & western areas. Showery for the Alps and Germany, although drier to the east. Low pressure centred over southern Scandinavia brings strong winds, local easterly gales around the central Baltic. Persistent rain for Denmark, plus northern coasts of Germany and Poland. Rain also affects the Baltic states and southern Sweden, whilst much of northern Scandinavia stays dry, and pleasantly warm, highs in western Norway reaching 23C.

Saturday
High pressure located to the west of Iberia brings fair weather to much of the peninsula, with north-easterly winds drawing hot air from the interior toward the south-west, highs 33C in the south. Some thunderstorms for eastern Spain and the Pyrenees. A few showers for Corsica, Sardinia and northern Italy. A heatwave continues for Greece and areas surrounding the Black Sea, climbing to 35 to 40C again.
Low pressure over the southern Baltic drives unsettled and cool conditions across northern-central Europe, with rain affecting Germany, Poland and France, although improving close to the English Channel, across the Low Countries and also Denmark as pressure builds. Pulses of thunderstorms are likely for Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and into western Ukraine, advancing north-east. Much of Norway, Sweden and Finland should be dry and warm, widely into the lows 20s Celsius. Some rain around the southern Baltic.
